British Airways reports 450,000 drop in passenger numbers
British Airways has today confirmed that 450,000 fewer passengers flew with the company in May 2010 compared to May 2009. However, a total of 8.6 million passengers used the company's services during May 2010 which was a 4.5% fall on the corresponding month in 2009. Heathrow, Glasgow and Edinburgh all saw passenger numbers fall by 6%, Aberdeen saw a fall of 4% with a 3% fall at Southampton and 2% at Stansted.
Much of the disruption to passenger numbers was caused by the volcanic ash saga as well as a number of strikes by workers. It is believed that without the volcanic ash issue and the strike activity traffic would actually have been up 0.4% compared to the corresponding period last year. However, there is no doubt that the friction between the union and the company is starting to have an impact upon the balance sheet and the reputation of British Airways. Both parties need to get back around the negotiating table and arrive at a settlement which both can agree upon and end this potentially destructive dispute.
The British Airways management, led by Willie Walsh, and the Unite union both appear to be very stubborn and unwilling at this moment in time to give any ground to the other side.
