Is there life at Tesco after Sir Terry Leahy?

As Tesco gets ready for life after Sir Terry Leahy there are concerns that a number of prominent players could be set to move elsewhere after Philip Clarke was announced as the successor to the hot seat. There is a feeling we are entering a new era for the company and indeed there are even suggestions that certain subsidiaries and certain assets could be demerged from the group allowing it to focus upon its core operations and release shareholder value.

After a period of over 30 years at the group and 14 years as the top man Sir Terry Leahy has placed Tesco in a position of enormous strength in the UK. However, it does look as though the future of Tesco will very different to the past with new strategies, new personnel and no doubt new targets to be announced due course.

When you consider that Tesco has annual sales of £63 billion and accounts for one pound in every seven pounds spent by UK consumers this perfectly reflects the enormously successful time of Sir Terry Leahy. However, life goes on and for Tesco the future is likely to be very different to the last 30 years which saw the group literally come from nowhere to become the leader in the UK supermarket sector.
