Pres. Obama launches further attack on BP
Ahead of a meeting with BPs chairman today, Pres. Obama has launched yet another ferocious attack on the oil giant demanding that the company puts aside billions of pounds to cover the cost of the cleanup operation and any resulting compensation. However, interestingly present Obama has also criticised the US obsession with fossil fuels with a suggestion that the economy needs to move in a different direction in the future.
There is no doubt that the US economy dominates the oil industry and the obsession with fossil fuels has been ongoing for many decades now. We have seen wars overseas, we have seen exploration projects in some of the harshest environments in the world and we have seen US demand for oil continue to grow. However, this seems to be the wake-up call which many in America had been dreading and the conversion from a fossil fuel based economy to a more environmentally friendly based economy will be difficult and it will take time.
Many people are suggesting that the US government has often ignored similar types of disasters involving US companies but because of a public backlash against BP the president feels he needs to "go with the people".
