British Airways talks collapse

Talks with the conciliation service ACAS have collapsed without an agreement between British Airways and the Unite union. This is something of a body blow to the two parties as hopes were high that an agreement could be reached and finally this most damaging flurry of industrial action would come to an end. So what next for British Airways?

There is now talk of further strike action in August, which would have a major impact upon the company at one of the peak times of the year. It seems as though both parties are entrenched and unwilling to give way on vital matters and even the conciliation service ACAS has been unable to find any real middle ground. There is no doubt that at some point the two parties will have to bury the hatchet and agree some kind of settlement but there is no sign whatsoever of any give and take.

Shareholders are becoming increasing concerned about the state of British Airways finances as the balance sheet is literally being stretched to the limit. Willie Walsh is also coming in for significant criticism from shareholders and unions alike who are concerned about his determined approach not to give in on matters such as travel perks for staff. Could Willie Walsh eventually become the fall guy?
