British Airways tables new offer

The management of British Airways have today tabled a new offer for the company's 11,000 cabin crew which were due to be balloted about a third course of strike action by the Unite union. This comes just hours after the company had made public its bid to take on a further 1,250 new cabin crew on significantly worse terms than the current workforce. So could this be the end of the strike?

It is believed that British Airways has effectively ring fenced the pay, conditions and promotion opportunities of existing staff while at the same time it is looking to reduce costs on an ongoing basis. While unions are obviously concerned about new staff being employed on significantly worse terms than the current cabin crew there is very little they can do in the short-term. It will be interesting to see whether the two parties are able to find some middle ground and bring this major dispute to an end so that all parties involved can concentrate on growing the business and recovering from what has been a disastrous period for British Airways.

There are rumours that the union still have significant issues regarding the new proposals but ultimately all parties will need to give way on certain elements of any deal.
