Japanese authorities considering Japan Airlines loan

Despite only yesterday suggesting that further loans for troubled Japan Airlines were out of the question, the Japanese authorities have done an about turn today and are said to be in talks about further support for the company. In a move which is backed by the Development Bank of Japan it would appear there is the possibility of significant funding being made available in the short term to see the company through this difficult period.

The worldwide airline industry is in disarray at the moment with speculation rife in many areas of the globe regarding potential bankruptcies and failures. This is not only placing pressure on companies who are struggling with their cash flow and finances, but it is also having a knock-on effect on previously healthy companies. There is an air of suspicion with regards to the airline industry as debts continue mount and more companies appear on the verge of collapse. So what can be done to avert a total collapse of the sector?

It looks as though governments around the world will need to step in at some point to ensure the sector does not run out of funding in the short to medium term. As we saw in the banking sector, concerns regarding some troubled airlines are now been transferred to companies which were previously in fairly healthy shape.
