UK businesses hit back

While there is no doubt that friction between the UK banking sector and UK businesses continues to grow, a group of three local businessmen literally took the matter into their own hands this weekend. It was reported that angry campaigners bricked up the front door of a Barclays Bank branch in Bournemouth attracting massive support from passing motorists and pedestrians.

The men in question are calling themselves the "Recessionairs" and while they have no particular problem with Barclays Bank they believe that the overall UK banking sector has cut small businesses adrift. This campaign has certainly caught the attention of the UK media and the problem of banks refusing to lend to small businesses, calling in overdrafts and increasing interest charges is certainly back on the agenda.

While this style of campaigning will obviously attract the attention of the mass media there is no doubt that the UK banking industry is very much a law unto itself. Pressure from the UK government, regulators, consumers and businesses have had little or no impact upon credit liquidity levels and there is no reason to believe this will change in the short to medium term. However, without the assistance of the UK banking arena there is little hope that the UK economy will recover in the short to medium term.
