UK pensioners concerned about the future

A survey from Aviva Group has today confirmed that just under 70% of workers in the UK, around 33 million people, fully expect to work beyond their retirement age purely and simply as a way of making ends meet. This is yet another reflection of the growing difficulty facing many people in older age as the cost of living continues to rise in the UK and pensioners appear to be off the radar with regards to government assistance.

The survey also confirmed that over 60% of the over 55s are now more concerned about how they will fund tax rises in the future than their own health. This statement on its own is a catastrophic blow to the UK benefits system which is not hitting those people who need government assistance the most. It is interesting that in the run-up to an election pensioners are often targeted with specific short-term financial assistance but very often forgotten after the government of the day has been elected. Let us hope that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government will at least look at the situation and try to offer assistance where possible.

While the plight of those in retirement at the moment is difficult to say the least the problem is it will only get worse unless we see significant changes in the benefits system and the pension industry.
