HMRC publishes list of Tax evaders
H M Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has released a list of companies and individuals who have deliberately avoided tax, naming and shaming them publicly.
HMRC is currently working hard to stamp down on those committing tax fraud, and this latest effort is designed to deter people, with the threat of them appearing in the public eye. This comes after a disclosure deal was signed earlier this week between the tax office and the Isle of Man, which will aim to prevent UK citizens hiding their money away on the island.
The names of the offenders, which can be seen here, can be published for a maximum of twelve months, will only appear in the public eye after they have been given ‘every opportunity’ to pay the tax that is owed.
The following was included in a statement from HMRC: “We have been given the power to publish these names to deter UK taxpayers from deliberately defaulting on their tax obligations. It also encourages the non-compliant to make a full disclosure at the outset of an investigation as doing do means their details will not be published”.
The Government has set aside nearly £1bn for HMRC alone in order to bring down the numbers of those committing tax evasion. HMRC said that it was dedicated to clamping down on tax cheats who, despite being a small minority, are evading their responsibilities and costing other law-abiding tax payers more.
