UK government set to turn on vets and lawyers
The UK tax authorities recently announced a tough review of doctors who are self-employed within the UK. However, the authorities have also announced a crackdown on vets and lawyers who should be paying UK tax and may have other sources of income which have yet to be declared. In exchange for reducing potential penalties by 90% the authorities have given those in these three professions the chance to come forward under their own steam and declare any unpaid taxes.
It seems as though the self-employed sector is coming under more and more scrutiny from the UK tax authorities despite the fact that many people employ their own accountants to arrange their tax returns. However, it is unlikely that those at the lower end of the self-employed income scale will come under as much pressure at those at the top end whose income is well above the UK average.
It will be interesting to see how many doctors, vets and lawyers step forward with details of undeclared income and undeclared assets and exactly how much this will raise the UK government. This is most certainly a taste of things to come with the authorities now cracking down harder and harder on those they see as potentially evading tax.
