Debenhams launches first divorce gift list
In what is thought to be the first "gift list" of its kind, Debenhams will today launch a "divorce gift list" with more and more couples celebrating their divorces with greetings cards and parties. In what is most certainly a sign of the times in the UK we seen the likes of Heather Mills and Jordan grabbing the headlines with over the top celebrations after their divorces have been confirmed.
This would appear to be yet another nail in the coffin of the UK Institute of marriage which has been under pressure for many years. It also comes at a time when the Conservative party has stepped forward with a promise to increase tax breaks for married couples in an attempt to slow down the ever-growing rate of divorce and unmarried couples in the UK. But is this a forlorn hope by the Conservative party?
The Institute of marriage is certainly nowhere near as popular as it has been in the past due in the main to a change in social trends and attitudes towards marriage. It is now more acceptable than ever for unmarried couples to live together and have children. Many believe that governments of recent years have further eroded the attractions of marriage due to changes in the taxation system and laws.
