HMRC blunder could cost you up to £1,300 a year

It has been revealed that HM Revenue and Customs has been the victim of a computer blunder which has seen hundreds of thousands of workers in the UK receiving up to 3 different tax codes which in some instances have all been incorrect. As a consequence it is believed that hundreds of thousands of workers in the UK could end up paying £1,300 a year more in tax than they are liable for. The new tax codes will kick in on 6 April and experts are advising all those in employment to ensure their tax codes are correct.

At a time when the UK government is desperate for cash it seems ironic that this computer blunder could cost some in the UK well over £1,000 a year in excess of tax payments. Even though you may well expect HMRC to contact those who have been affected it seems that this is not possible as in many cases the authorities are not yet aware of individual errors. So what can you do?

Everybody in the UK is being advised to check their new tax codes which they should have received over the last few weeks. If there are problems or errors then they should be addressed as soon as possible because ultimately once you start paying tax under the new code, whether it is right or wrong, it may be more difficult to change midway through the next tax year.
