David Cameron set to introduce laws to reduce Parliamentary privilege

David Cameron will this week set out plans to introduce new laws which would reduce Parliamentary privilege if the Conservatives gain office at the next election. This follows suggestions that three of the four politicians charged with false accounting by the police may well try to invoke the 1689 Bill of Rights and use Parliamentary privilege to avoid a criminal trial.

Yet again David Cameron has managed to jump the gun on Gordon Brown and again claim the high moral ground with regards to MPs expenses and any potential prosecutions. The fact that the three MPs rumoured to be considering using the 1689 Bill of Rights act to avoid prosecution are Labour MPs places more pressure on Gordon Brown. It will be interesting to see how Gordon Brown reacts to this move by David Cameron which has been swift and firm.

This is not the first time the Gordon Brown has been left wanting with regards to the MPs expenses scandal and he will need to consider his position very carefully and attempt to bring the three Labour MPs in question "back in line". The very future of Gordon Brown's political career could well depend on how he reacts to David Cameron's firm and decisive move.
