Is your tax code correct for 2010/11?

As the aftermath of the tax code saga within HM Revenue and Customs continues to roll across the UK it is believed that potentially millions of UK taxpayers could be in possession of the wrong tax code. The vast majority of us will never have actually checked our tax code to see if we are paying the correct amount of tax, often taking what we are told as gospel, but there is now a need to check that your tax code is actually correct.

While HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed that potentially millions of incorrect tax codes have been sent out, with some people receiving three or four different tax codes, they will not be sending out corrections. It would appear that the system error cannot be reversed and at this point in time, and possibly never, HMRC is not able to identify individual errors. So basically it is down to each and every taxpayer in the UK to check their tax codes and make sure they are correct. If you have any doubts about your tax code you should contact HMRC and make them aware of your concerns at which point they will instigate a review of your details and confirm whether or not the tax code you have is correct.
