Did HMRC know of the pending tax code issues?

Money Mail is today running an article suggesting that the UK authorities knew of the impending problems regarding tax code notices issued by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). It is believed that the newspaper is in possession of minutes from various meetings within HMRC seeming to indicate they were aware of problems with the new computer system in the second half of 2009.

This comes just days after HMRC admitted that a significant number of the 25 million tax codings sent out for the 2010/11 tax year could be incorrect. As we have mentioned in some of our earlier articles, it was also revealed that HMRC is unable to identify the incorrect tax codes and therefore unable to contact those who may suffer financially because of the issue. As a consequence, all UK citizens who have received a tax coding from the HMRC are being advised to check to see whether their code is correct.

Even though the authorities continue to play down the potential chaos which this could cause it is estimated that unless the situation is rectified we could see some people paying hundreds if not thousands of pounds in additional tax each month. You have been warned!
