Green energy sector holding UK government to ransom

The renewable energy sector has today made a call for additional government financing of £500 million over the next two years. This is the amount of investment which the industry believes is required to meet government targets over the next two years with regards to energy usage and climate change. However, the call for additional finance comes at a time when the public purse is empty and the UK government is deep into its overdraft.

It is rather bizarre that despite the doom and gloom surrounding the UK and the UK economy, and the massive investment in green technology over recent years, sector leaders still feel happy to tap UK taxpayers for additional finance. When you consider the number of "green taxes" introduced by the UK government over the last few years so far UK consumers have seen very little benefit from this "investment into the future".

The vast majority of the £500 million cash injection requested by the industry would appear set to be targeted towards wind power generation which has yet to really take off in UK. We have seen many experimental programmes both on UK shores and offshore but have we really seen a return which would justify additional taxpayer investment of £250 million?
