Local authorities increase use of microchips in wheelie bins
The Big Brother Watch group has confirmed an alarming increase in the number of microchips installed in UK wheelie bins with 68 UK authorities now having access to the technology against just 42 last year. It has also been revealed that 2.6 million bins in the UK currently carry the microchips which local authorities claim are being used to identify individual bins and offer incentives. But is this really the case?
We have recently seen the introduction of a number of schemes which will "reward" homeowners for disposing of less waste and recycling as much as they can. The schemes have been designed to incentivise the recycling of waste, thereby ensuring that less is sent to landfill and other less environmentally friendly waste disposal services. However, many people believe that at some point we could see the introduction of fines for those who "produce too much waste" even though every home in the country pays local taxes for the collection and disposal of household waste.
It is coming to the point when many in the UK are wondering exactly how their local taxes and national taxes are being spent and how the situation could change in the medium to longer term. Slowly but surely the use of microchips in wheelie bins has increased, going relatively unnoticed in the popular press, but many are now starting to wonder exactly why this has been done "under cover of darkness".
