Why is the MPs expenses saga still running?
On the same day that three MPs and a Peer appeared in the City of Westminster Magistrates Court it was revealed that many other MPs are being forced to pay back but a fraction of their alleged "unlawful expenses claims". Despite the fact that David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown all promised UK voters that they would address the expenses scandal with no favour, many MPs appear to be paying back but a fraction of the expense claims in question.
Indeed we have seen examples of MPs claiming second home allowances on properties in which they spend most of their time, something which is directly contrary to the expenses rules. Quite why many of the high-profile MPs in question are not being forced to pay back "reasonable" amounts of their expense claims is a mystery but many believe that MPs are yet again "feathering their own nests".
For many years the murky world of MPs expenses has been shrouded in mystery although once the cat was out of the bag, after a Freedom of Information request, the situation has become embarrassing for all parties involved. At this moment in time it is unclear exactly who will be made to pay back so-called "unreasonable expenses" after various initial rulings were altered and in many cases overturned.
