German chancellor plays hardball over Greece bailout
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is today being hailed as one of Germany's top politicians after she managed to attach a number of very strict conditions to the proposed bailout of Greece. It is believed that both Germany and France were against a full-scale bailout, without conditions, but it was left up to Chancellor Merkel to push through with her hardline approach.
Whether she has inadvertently reduced the power of the German government within Europe in the short to medium term remains to be seen but there are very strict conditions attached to the Greek bailout. In simple terms, funding will only be forwarded to Greece if unanimous approval is received from the all Eurozone members.
It appears that the German population are very wary of bailing out the Greek authorities because many within Europe, and outside of Europe, believe that the government increase has been living beyond its means for some time. Indeed a quick look at the financial figures suggest that the Greek economy has been on the verge of collapsing on numerous occasions in the past and the final sting in the tail of the worldwide recession has finally brought the country to its knees.
