CIPD suggest up to 500,000 public-sector jobs at risk

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have today issued a nightmare scenario for the UK public sector with a suggestion that 10% of the 5.8 million workforce could see their jobs at risk. This would equate to more than 500,000 job losses in the UK public sector in the short to medium term as any new government would need to reduce the cost of the public sector - reducing the liability of the government and UK taxpayers.

The potential 10% reduction in the workforce is by far and away higher than any official suggestions from the political parties in their manifestos and again opens the debate about whether all parties are "being totally honest with voters". The truth is that no political party, with the potential exception of the Labour Party, has any real understanding of the detailed government financial position and until the new government is in place very little will be confirmed. However, the Conservative party has already issued plans to reduce the public sector workforce, reduce costs and attempt to rein in the power and the size of the public sector as a whole.
