Police bonus payments under review

In what many believe will be a total restructuring of the UK public sector it has been revealed that the police bonus system is to be reviewed, a move which has been backed by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson. Sir Paul, who is said to have turned down bonus payments of around £100,000 since 2005, believes that the system is flawed and potentially costing the UK taxpayer £40 million a year it needs to be reviewed. It is believed that the UK government is currently looking into the situation amid signs that bonuses in the public sector may not be as commonplace in the future as they have been.

This is the first of many difficult and very controversial issues which the UK government will need to address in the short to medium term. Under the current system all serving police officers are entitled to a bonus at the end of each year and many experts believe it is difficult to implement a private sector-based system in the public sector. It is not known whether these bonus payments might be replaced by increased salaries or whether a new system will be introduced to reward the best officers in the UK.
