Has the government got it wrong on public-sector cuts?

UK unions are now starting to challenge the UK government's decision to slash the public sector budget deficit in such a relatively short space of time. They believe that the government's short timetable to cut the deficit could potentially lead to 2 million job cuts in the UK and a period of immense economic pressure which could set back the UK many years.

While many unions in the UK privately admit that there are inefficiencies in the public sector they believe the government should actually be looking at creating jobs in the short to medium term rather than cutting jobs. Quite how the government would be expected to create employment positions in the middle of an economic downturn is another question.

It is believed that unions may well hold off on any large scale industrial action until next March when the spending cuts will be confirmed. This opinion is very much at odd to that of the UK public with a number of recent surveys suggesting there is widespread support for reductions in the public-sector budget. However, whether the UK public, and the UK workforce, will feel the same after the cuts hit home next year remains to be seen.
