Is David Cameron looking to break up the benefits system?

David Cameron today stands accused of starting a campaign to reduce the funding of the UK benefits system with an attempt to stem fraudulent activity which is costing the UK taxpayer around £5 billion a year. However, the truth is that the UK benefits system, one of the fairest and most lucrative in the world, was initially created to help those on very low incomes. Over the last 20 years or so the system has been expanded and some families earning in excessive £30,000 a year are often eligible for some form of state financial assistance.

If David Cameron is able to redress the balance of the UK benefits system and ensure that most focus is upon those on very low incomes then surely today's announcement is a step forward?

Historically the Conservative party and the UK benefits system have not gone hand in hand with constant accusations that the Tory party would rather reduce the UK benefits system and pump more money into business. There are many different ways to look at the UK benefits system although it was created for those at the lower end of the income spectrum and has somewhat lost its way over the last 20 years.
