HM Revenue and Customs closes down scam tax websites

HM Revenue and Customs has today confirmed that nearly 200 bogus tax return websites have been close down as cyber criminals target those looking to reclaim money from their tax returns. The so-called "phishing" e-mails sent out by many of these websites have attracted the attention of consumers in the UK who are looking to reclaim money from the tax man. However, the reality is very different!

The main purpose of these websites is to obtain private and confidential information about individuals as well as their bank account details. As soon as this information is in the possession of the cyber criminals, victims will find their bank accounts have been cleared and credit cards and other financial arrangements may well have been obtained in their name. You should only ever contacts the official HM Revenue and Customs website if you have queries about your tax return or else seek professional financial advice.

The problem of cyber crime is becoming more prevalent around the UK as more and more people join the Internet revolution. We all need to be very careful about unsolicited contact via e-mail or even telephone because very often there can be significant drawbacks!
