One in five tax records could be wrong

An internal review by HM Revenue and Customs has highlighted the fact that up to one in five tax records of the 45 million employment files in the UK could contain incorrect tax information. This is a telling indictment of the tax authorities in the UK after billions upon billions of pounds of taxpayer's money had been spent on various computer systems which were supposed to make the system safer and more reliable.

When you consider that just over 1 million people will be expected to repay on average just under £1500 because of problems with the taxation system how would it sound if potentially millions more people had received the wrong tax code this year?

This is the potential problem which has been flagged already amid concerns of a meltdown of the UK taxation authorities which could take some time to resolve and could cost UK taxpayers a considerable amount of money. While there are problems with the current computer system it is believed that this new system is the reason why problems in the past have now been flagged and need to be resolved.

Confidence in the UK taxation system is historically very low but the problems announced this week mark a new low.
