Competitors hover over Connaught

Social housing and maintenance group Connaught may be dead but there is a flurry of activity amongst the company's competitors looking to grab a number of potentially lucrative contracts with local authorities in the UK. Already we have seen Mears and Morgan Sindall acquire a number of contracts from local authorities who are now desperate to find alternative contractors to carry out maintenance and additional work.

There is growing concern that in the short term a number of local authorities may well need to increase their funding for local services otherwise there could be legal ramifications from taxpayers. Mears announced a deal today which will see the company take on eight former Connaught contracts around the UK. It is believed that contracts are now changing hands for nominal fees in the rush to ensure a continuity which is vital to the delivery of local services.

Whether or not the collapse of Connaught group will have wider ramifications for the public sector/private sector interaction remains to be seen because this has left many people on the verge of unemployment and many local authorities in a desperate situation. Did the public sector begin to over depend upon the private sector?
