Do we need a reorganisation of HM Revenue and Customs?
As the taxation debacle in the UK continues to grow legs and arms amid signs there may be more issues behind the scenes, a number of prominent experts in the taxation fields are now concerned about the reputation of HM Revenue and Customs. Despite the fact that billions of pounds of taxpayer's money had been invested in various computer systems over the last decade it seems that we are no better off than we were at the start of the millennium. So do we need a reorganisation of HM Revenue and Customs?
HM Revenue and Customs is a massive monster in the UK government and takes in a number of different activities and responsibilities. It is likely that we could see potentially a new taxation department set up to purely and simply look after personal taxation issues as a stand-alone operation from the rest of HM Revenue and Customs. However, this will take some time to put together and there would no doubt be potentially large costs to take into account as well. As a consequence, in the short to medium term we are likely to see very few changes at HM Revenue and Customs although we may see the odd scapegoat stepping forward to take the blame on behalf of the authorities.
