BBC dispute could halt coverage of George Osborne's spending review

The coverage of George Osborne spending review which is scheduled for 20 October could be in doubt as union leaders today announced dates for a number of strikes in the weeks and months ahead at the BBC. There is no doubt that the proposed action on the day of George Osborne's vital speech has been premeditated and is timed to cause maximum disruption.

Over the last couple of days the battle lines have been drawn between the UK government and the unions with regards to proposed public spending cuts. Some of the rhetoric used on the TV coverage today would suggest that the unions are most definitely up for the fight and are looking to mobilize vast areas of the UK population in the weeks and months ahead. Whether or not the unions are successful in bringing in non-union members to cause disruption and mayhem across the UK remains to be seen but they are certainly doing their best to stir up trouble for the UK government.

At the same time, David Cameron is still adamant that he would like to discuss the way ahead with union leaders who have been issued with an open invitation to attend talks at number 10 Downing St.
