Minister rapped for benefits jibe
Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has been forced into a grovelling apology after suggesting that the state should not be forced to support large families on benefits. At a time when the Conservative party in particular is under pressure regarding child benefits and other welfare handouts this could not have come at a worse time. So are we seeing a return of old Conservative party policies?
There is no doubt that David Cameron is on a mission to change the beliefs and the policies of the Conservative party but there is also no doubt that he faces a momentous challenge. Already there are many backbenchers critical of his recent announcement on child benefit with the Labour Party in particular again painting David Cameron as a supporter of the rich.
However, the controversial comment by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has opened something of a can of worms with many people now openly discussing the UK benefit system and welfare state. While there is no doubt that the welfare system has grown out of control and now touches every area of UK life there is also no doubt that many people do need the support of the state. Will David Cameron be able to push through his changes? Will the Conservative party ever change?
