Is David Cameron losing the support of the middle classes?

Today's revelation that pension fund tax relief will be severely scaled back for those at the top end of the spectrum has cast further light upon David Cameron's support from the middle classes. When you take into account recent tax rises, the abolition of child benefit for those on higher incomes and now the scaling back of tax relief on pension fund contributions, is David Cameron in danger of losing the support of the middle classes?

There is no doubt that the last few weeks have been disastrous for many middle to high earners in the UK who appear to be taking the strain more than those at the lower end of the income spectrum. When you consider these are the very people whom David Cameron and the Conservative party has historically depended upon it would seem something of a bizarre move from a political point of view?

However, whether David Cameron and his coalition partners are simply showing they are willing to share the burden across the board or indeed there is over influence from the Liberal Democrat element of the coalition is debatable. Would the Labour Party have done much different if it had regained power at the last election?
