Government buying strategies under pressure
Despite the fact that Sir Philip Green has only been in his advisory role for a relatively short space of time he has pinpointed a number of issues which the UK government needs to address sooner rather than later. It seems there is no central buying policy across the various government departments and potentially millions of pounds a year could be "wasted" with various discounts and tighter funded arrangements falling by the wayside.
When you consider the number of people working in the UK public sector, the number of mobile phones, the number of laptops and the number of everyday contracts which we all come across, the fact there is no central purchasing policy is a mystery. Sir Philip Green has already highlighted a large number of specific elements and confirmed savings which are literally in the billions of pounds. Will the UK government take on board Sir Philip Green's advice? Will the support of Lord Alan Sugar in the Lords help this case?
Whatever happens there is no doubt that tighter contracts and more centralised purchasing arrangements would make a major difference.
