Can George Osborne live up to the hype?
As George Osborne approaches what many believe to be his day of reckoning, i.e. confirmation of the spending review, there is some speculation as to whether he can live up to the hype. Over the last few weeks he has been adamant that the UK budget deficit needs to be addressed sooner rather than later and indeed yesterday received a surprise boost when 35 of the U.K.'s leading companies backed his plans in an open letter to the Daily Telegraph. But is George Osborne brave enough to take his fight to the unions and the masses?
At this moment in time David Cameron and George Osborne would appear to make a formidable pair in the UK political arena, flexing their muscles and willing to take on the unions on a number of issues. However, it is evident that over the last couple of days we have seen a softening of various dances with regards to the likes of defence spending as a means of maintaining public confidence at a critical time for the UK economy and the UK government.
It seems almost inevitable that George Osborne will stick to the party line in relation to spending cuts but it is also inevitable that we will see some "giveaways" with previously rumoured budget cuts in certain areas to be reduced and some budgets protected.
