Can Gordon Brown continue until the next election?

Despite the fact that Gordon Brown would appear to have survived yet another attempted leadership coup it is believed that no mention of the issue was made at today's Cabinet meeting which was attended by big players in the UK government. Surely the issue of a potential leadership coup should have been top of the agenda as Gordon Brown and his allies look to stamp out this unruly behaviour from within the party?

This now begs the question as to whether Gordon Brown is strong enough and able to carry the party through to the next general election with a number of MPs critical of his style of leadership. It is also worth remembering that Gordon Brown is an unelected Prime Minister, having taking control of office after Tony Blair's departure, and his side kick Lord Mandelson is not even a member of the Commons.

We are in a very bizarre situation which is unlikely to clear before the election with many Labour MPs adamant that now is the time for change but few prepared to say so in the media. It was believed that up to 6 Cabinet members were willing to resign their posts and force Gordon Brown to leave office but apparently they decided otherwise at the last minute.
