Alistair Darling under more pressure

Chancellor Of The Exchequer Alistair Darling is today under renewed pressure amid signs that the UK economic recovery may be faltering. It is common knowledge within political circles that Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown have very different views on the public sector budget with Alistair Darling favouring a reduction in investment while Gordon Brown is adamant that investment should be maintained at least in the short term.

Many people also believe that, assuming the UK government is victorious at the next election, Alistair Darling's days in the Treasury are numbered with Gordon Brown apparently looking to jettison him some months ago but unable to do so when his power and influence was reduced. While Alistair Darling himself has been fairly quiet of late, the few public statements he has made have often been at loggerheads with those presented by Gordon Brown.

While this is not the first time that a Prime Minister and a Chancellor of the Exchequer have been at loggerheads (Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for example) we need to see both parties singing from the same hymn sheet in these troubled economic times. Internal bickering will only delay the eventual recovery of the UK economy and could cause further long-term damage to the UK's financial strength.
