Public sector staff to lose automatic pay rise

Some employees working in the public sector in the UK are set to miss out on automatic pay rises, as part of a Government initiative which is set to save £11.5bn.

This will come as a massive blow to those working in the public sector industries. The Chancellor, George Osborne, justified the cuts by proposing it was “deeply unfair” on those public sector workers who do not receive the pay rise, as well as private sector workers who effectively pay for it.

Economic growth forecasts were increased in the latest Budget, piling more pressure on the Government to save as much money as possible. Labour has admitted it would stick with the cuts should they be elected in the next General Election.

George Osborne, who announced the news to Members of Parliament, said: “Britain is moving out of intensive care and is moving from rescue to recovery.

“Progression can best be described as antiquated; at worst, it’s deeply unfair to other parts of the public sector who don’t get it and to the private sector who pay for it.

“So we will end automatic progression pay in the Civil Service by 2015-2016”.
