Poundworld’s “everything £1” claim banned
08/10/2014
Poundworld have been banned from making the “everything £1” claim by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), as some items were found to be on sale for as much as £8.99.
They have been told that they could eventually be able to make the claim again, but only once they can prove that every item they sell is priced at £1.
Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld defended the discount chains policy, by claiming that the only products sold for more than £1 are “managers specials”.
He said: "Occasionally we see a one-off product that is incredible value costing over the single price point that we believe our customers would like to see on sale."
However, some staff members have previously complained about the offers, as unhappy customers have occasionally vented their frustration at the checkout staff.
One sales assistant wrote on a review website: “The checkout staff seem to get most of the abuse, especially about the prices of the managers special line”.
Growing popularity
Despite customer complaints about misleading advertising from the discount chain, stores such as Poundworld have been growing in popularity in recent years.
Research has shown that discount chains such as Poundworld, Poundland and B&M have occupied one in five stores that have been closed as a result of other companies going into administration.
The growing popularity of these discount stores has been fuelled by the recession, which has prompted people to adopt more savvy spending habits.
However, some commentators have warned consumers that pound shops are not always the cheapest option. This is because supermarkets often sell the same products as part of multi-packs, that works out cheaper than £1 per item.
