Aldi to create 35,000 UK jobs
11/11/2014
Aldi have announced plans to create 35,000 new jobs in the UK, as it aims to have 1,000 stores in the UK by 2022.
The discount supermarket will open 54 new stores this year alone, with 60 to 65 planned next year. The store plans to invest £600 million into the British economy as it extends its operations.
Aldi has said that the new jobs will include a range of management roles, in store and in Aldi’s offices, as well as shop floor and warehouse positions.
Aldi’s market share has been growing substantially over the past five years, and along with other discount supermarket Lidl, it has been putting the "big four" supermarket chains under pressure with lower prices that have proved popular with consumers. Aldi now has a 4.8% share of the UK grocery market, in comparison to Tescos 28.8% share and Asdas 17.4%.
Aldi’s managing director, Matthew Barns, said:
“Our expansion plans means that we can accommodate growing shopper numbers, while ensuring there is an Aldi store only a short drive away from people, no matter where they live in the country. We are opening our doors across the UK, making it even easier for people to shop and save with us.”
Some analysts have claimed the creation of jobs may not necessarily be beneficial to the UK. Nick Bubb, a retail analyst, said:
"These are low-paid 'jobs' and some of them will come from Aldi putting other small stores out of business."
