Tesco most complained about by suppliers

23/06/2015

Tesco has been revealed as the worst UK supermarket for complying with industry guidelines designed to protect suppliers, according to a survey of food and drinks suppliers.

The survey, which was confidential, shows that 30% of suppliers believe that Tesco rarely complied with the Groceries Supply Code of Practice, and 4% said that they never complied. This compares to 12% of suppliers who agreed Sainsburys and Marks & Spencer rarely complied, and just 5% of suppliers who claimed that Aldi rarely complied.

The only retailer to score less than Tesco was Iceland, as 35% of their suppliers thought they rarely complied with the code of practice. Morrisons also did badly, with 32% claiming it rarely or never complied.

The survey was conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA). More than 1,000 food and drink suppliers took part. GCA has claimed that the high total for Tesco is reflective of the fact that Tesco is the UKs biggest retailer and account for 30% of all grocery spending.

Despite the findings, the leader of the GCA, Christine Tacon, has claimed that Tesco has seen “a big improvement” under the current CEO, Dave Lewis. She said:
“We still have some way to go in important areas, but this is a clear sign we are on the right track.
“Suppliers are more aware of the GCA and its work and fewer now believe the GCA will not be able to do anything if they bring an issue to me.”
