Gordon Brown hung out to dry by Hillary Clinton
Gordon Brown is this evening reeling from a diplomatic coup for the Argentine government regarding sovereignty of the Falklands. Hillary Clinton extended her stay in the region to chat with the Argentine government regarding the Falklands and has suggested she would like to see both parties sitting around the negotiating table to settle their differences. The Argentine government will make greater political headlines with this comment which effectively leaves the UK cut adrift in international circles.
The UK government can ill afford to give way on sovereignty of the Falklands and indeed its position has remained steadfast for some time. However, there is no doubt that with oil production set to hit the region (and potentially bring in significant tax income for the UK government) the pressure is mounting on Gordon Brown. Quite why the American authorities have taken this particular line with regards to the Falklands is a mystery but many believe it is a short-term face saving issue, after recent problems between the US and the Argentine government.
There is no doubt that the Falkland islanders are steadfastly in support of UK government and have never voiced their support for a change in sovereignty. Gordon Brown needs to be firm and he needs to be clear on the UK government's stance, NOW!
