Network rail risks the wrath of unions

It has been revealed that Network Rail is seeking an injunction which will block next week's national strike plan by the RMT union. This move comes despite the fact that both parties have been around the negotiating table for some days now and there were hopes of a resolution in the short term. However, it looks as though the Network Rail move to block the strike through the courts could backfire and the sides are this evening further apart than ever before.

We should hear tomorrow morning whether the injunction has been signed off by a High Court judge although it would appear to rest on a technicality regarding the notification period given to some National Rail employees. Even if the injunction is signed off by the High Court tomorrow it seems only matter of time before the unions are able to re-ballot their members and plan more industrial action in the short to medium term.

The UK economy needs all the help it can get at the moment and further strike action in a number of industries could damage the UK recovery. Quite how National Rail can expect to sit around the negotiating table holding an injunction in the air is a mystery and perhaps not the best means of negotiating?
