Has Gordon Brown alienated the business sector in the UK?
Despite Lord Mandelson criticising some of the UK's more prominent business leaders, who backed the Conservative party pledge to reduce the increase in national insurance, Gordon Brown yesterday repeated his concern that business leaders have been "duped". The initial attack by Lord Mandelson produced a furious backlash from the business arena and now Gordon Brown is literally provoking the same kind of response. So why is Gordon Brown back on the attack?
There is no doubt that the Labour movement is now returning to grassroots support and provoking an "us against them" mentality as we push towards the election. However, when you look back at "new Labour" successes in years gone by, it is evident that the support of business leaders and businesses was paramount in these successes. The recent gentle switch to "old Labour" is now gathering pace and Gordon Brown and Lord Mandelson obviously believe their best chance of success is to ensure grassroots Labour supporters vote at the election.
It will be interesting to see how the attack on business leaders in the UK translates into voting intentions because many working in the private sector are more and more concerned about those working with more job security in the public sector.
