Could George Osborne be the Conservative Party's trump card?

While David Cameron continues to attract positive headlines regarding his role as leader of the Conservative Party the same cannot be said of shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne who seems to go from zero to hero in just a matter of hours. The Labour Party has for some time highlighted George Osborne as a potential weak point within the Conservative Party set up but ultimately he has caught Gordon Brown offguard on a number of issues of late.

A run of well received announcements from George Osborne can be traced back to 2007 when he promised to abolish inheritance tax for the middle classes. This saw the shadow Chancellor call the bluff of the Labour Party who had to backtrack on their initial inheritance tax position and move back towards a similar situation to that highlighted by George Osborne. We then saw George Osborne play his trump card last week with the announcement that he would abolish the Labour Party 1% increase in national insurance for the vast majority of workers in the UK. This again caught Gordon Brown offguard and a concerted effort to attack the idea has backfired spectacularly with business leader after business leader after business leader lining up behind George Osborne and David Cameron.

Could George Osborne actually be the trump card that the Conservative Party has been looking for all along?
