Volcanic ash causes chaos in worldwide travel market

Ash from a volcano in Iceland is causing no end of problems within the worldwide travel network with airlines grounded in the UK and many other countries. It is expected that the massive cloud of ash, some of which is actually settling in northern Scotland, will take at least two more days to clear and it is unlikely that airline travel in the UK will return to normal until next week.

There are now growing concerns regarding customers unable to fly to their destinations because travel insurance operators are unclear as to confirm this particular "act of God" is covered by popular travel insurance. When you consider the likes of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany, France and Poland have grounded the vast majority of their airlines it is easy to see how the problem is worldwide.

This is a situation the like of which we've never seen before and is one which is likely to bring the insurance sector into more controversial areas of consumer services. We should get a definitive ruling on UK travel insurance policies next week although even this definitive ruling could vary from provider to provider depending upon the small print in your travel insurance.
