Nick Clegg buoyant on poll forecast

Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, is tonight looking at a potential gain of 40 seats at the next election which would give his party a massive negotiating chip after the next election. At the moment it seems odds-on we will get a hung Parliament and there is confusion as to which party the Liberal Democrats would actually look to form a government with.

Initially it appeared odds-on that the Liberal Democrats would look towards the Labour Party to form a coalition but over the last few days Nick Clegg has been adamant he would not support a party which finished third in the popular poll. This opens a potential coalition between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrats which would effectively leave the Labour Party cut adrift for some time to come.

At this moment in time there is only one winner amongst UK voters with Nick Clegg's reputation going from strength to strength. However, over the last few days we have seen a drip feed of critical articles about Liberal Democrat policies and indeed a number of Liberal Democrat candidates have been accused of making inappropriate comments. Immigration would seem to be the main stumbling block between the Liberal Democrat party and the Conservative party but time will tell whether any middle ground can be found.
