British Airways cabin crew vote on strike action

The British Airways cabin crew have today begun voting on potential strike action over pay and working conditions. The Unite union is suggesting that industrial action could occur fairly quickly after the election if members vote in favour of strike action. The union itself speaks for 90% of British Airways 12,000 cabin crew and voting on potential strike action will finish on 7 May, only one day after the election.

The Unite union is advising members to reject the latest offer from British Airways, a company which is struggling to cope with disaster after disaster. While the unions are well aware of the reduced strength of British Airways, due to the volcanic ash saga, they will also be aware that the company has very little in the way of funding to improve its current offer. We are now approaching something of an impasse with neither party prepared to give way and lose face in public.

The truth of the matter is that British Airways needs to reduce its cost base, working practices will change in due course and the company needs to do this sooner rather than later. To say the situation is now critical is a big understatement!
