UK economic recovery in danger

This weekend could turn out to be one of the turning points in the UK economy amid concerns that a coalition government could take many days to put together. Despite a number of potential coalition government offers on the table, the Liberal Democrats have issues with both the Labour party and the Conservative party which could take some time to iron out. So why not compromise?

The whole basis of a coalition government is trust and focus with neither of the parties involved in a potential coalition government wanting to give much ground on their key policies - as this will impact upon confidence. While there is an obviously need to compromise in certain areas, the Conservative party is against electoral reform while the Liberal Democrat party has placed this subject at the top of its list of coalition demands.

There is also the potential problem of pushing through any compromise agreements with many Conservative MPs expressing their concern about giving too much to the Liberal Democrat party in exchange for support. Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg will also have similar issues with their own party members which could see coalition talks drag on for many days to come. On the fringes of the political scene we also have potential legal challenges due to issues arising on election night which saw literally thousands of people in the UK unable to vote.
