Could a United States of Europe ever compete with the United States of America?

As the European Union bailout fund continues to attract attention from investors around the world many are wondering whether a United States of Europe would ever be in a position to compete on a level playing field against the United States of America. While there is no doubt that the US authorities have made mistakes in the past but there is also no doubt that the US economy is the engine room of the worldwide economy. Could the EU ever compete on the same scale?

While this is no doubt that growth in the European Union has been swift over the last few years there is some doubt as to whether the quality of entrants to the European Union have been as high as they should have been. Only now we have seen Greece fall by the wayside, after a period during which concern had been growing about the finances of the country, are questions being asked. There is speculation that other European countries could encounter financial difficulties in the short-term but there are also concerns about the amount of funding which some of the smaller new member states have taken on board.

At this moment in time there is no doubt that a United States of Europe is not in position to compete with the United States of America and any likelihood of this is some way off.
