Office of Fair Trading looking at UK infrastructure companies

The Office of Fair Trading is set to embark on a groundbreaking exercise to create a list of all essential economic infrastructure in the UK and detail ownership and control of these assets. While this will not include items such as schools and hospitals it will include water companies, electric companies and other utility companies which are central to the UK business and consumer arena.

Once this massive list has been constructed and cross ownership and control issues have been addressed it is likely we could see further reviews of specific sectors. There has been growing concern for some time that overseas companies are now controlling more and more of the UK utility sector and having a greater influence on the cost of living and everyday life in the UK. Quite what the authorities would look to do if excessive control was confirmed in any specific area remains to be seen but the very fact that the public will be made aware of the underlying owners of specific assets is certainly a plus point.

David Cameron and his coalition government have certainly hit the ground running and there are high hopes for the future!
