Will Kenneth Clarke make a comeback as Chancellor?
While Kenneth Clarke, the old father of the Conservative party, has made a comeback as the Justice Secretary in the new coalition government there are still calls for him to be reinstated as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Despite the fact that George Osborne has made a more than credible start to his career as Chancellor of the Exchequer he appears to be under constant pressure with the shadow of Kenneth Clarke hanging over him.
Kenneth Clarke appears to attract the respects of politicians from all parties and many believe this is why he would make an ideal Chancellor of the Exchequer in the event that George Osborne was found "not up to the job". Whether or not this will happen remains to be seen because Kenneth Clarke has been very vocal in his wish to remain in the background of the new coalition government rather than on the frontline.
However, there is no doubt that Kenneth Clark's reputation and his experience, not to mention his skill at managing the UK economy, would be very valuable especially in the current economic climate. Whether the coalition government will eventually get the chance to use this experience and these skills remains to be seen.
