BT workers on the verge of strike
The Communication Workers Union, which represents the interests of 50,000 BT employees, has today ridiculed the latest pay deal offered by BT. The pay offer by BT is below the rate of inflation which effectively means that the spending power of BT employees would be reduced in real terms. What makes the situation even worse is the fact that some senior BT executives are rumoured to have received pay increases in excess of 7% while the vast majority of staff continue to suffer.
If any industrial action comes to fruition it will paralyze BT and affect areas such as telecoms and broadband. There are very many similarities with regards to the proposed BT strike action and the action taken against British Airways with both companies needing to modernise their trading methods and looking to cut costs in the short to medium term. It was rumoured that BT had made an acceptable offer at the weekend which the union was on the verge of accepting although this would appear not to be the case today.
There is no doubt that strike action in the UK will continue to increase as companies try to rein in their spending and the economy continues to tread water.
